THE FINISHWISE JOURNAL

Keep finish decisions clear with your contractor

A useful choice record names the exact item, who needs to approve it, and when the answer is needed.

Finish decisions are easier when everyone can see the same product and the same answer. A photo saved on a phone may not show the color name, size, finish, or the date it was approved. A brief written record can prevent an understandable mix-up.

Record the details that identify the item

For each selection, note the maker, model or SKU, color, dimensions, quantity, and the room where it belongs. Include a link or product sheet, but do not rely on a link alone: items can be renamed, discontinued, or replaced. If the choice is a sample, label the sample before it leaves the showroom.

Ask the contractor which decisions are needed next and the date by which an answer is useful. That date should account for ordering and the stage of work, not just the day an installer arrives. If the lead time changes, confirm whether another choice would keep the work moving or create a different cost.

Agree on the handoff

Clarify who orders the item, who checks the delivery, and who contacts the supplier if a box arrives damaged. Confirm whether the contractor needs a written approval before placing a non-returnable order. These details are especially important when the homeowner is buying some items directly.

Keep the record simple: decided, still comparing, or needs a question answered. Add the date and the person who gave the final approval. If something changes, write down what changed and whether the price or dimensions changed too.

This is not about adding paperwork for its own sake. It is about making sure the faucet ordered is the faucet that fits, and the tile that arrives is the tile everyone saw. A calm conversation before an order is usually easier than sorting out a mismatch after delivery.
