In a report released September 18, 2025, NKBA described design directions respondents expected to matter in kitchens over the following three years. The article discusses natural materials, calmer colors, task lighting, storage, and more personalized kitchens. Those findings report survey responses; they do not predict what every homeowner will prefer.

Consider the reported ideas at home

Wood cabinetry and natural stone can bring variation and warmth, but they ask you to accept differences from one board or slab to the next. View the actual material when possible and ask how it should be cared for. Neutral colors may be a comfortable base, while a colored island or backsplash can add character. A smaller, replaceable accent may be less risky than a strong color across many fixed surfaces.

The report also describes attention to task lighting and storage. These are worth testing against the way you cook: Is the counter in shadow? Are pans hard to reach? A light under an upper cabinet or a drawer near the range may solve a concrete annoyance. Added fixtures and organizers still have product and installation costs.

Before adopting a connected appliance or smart control, check its power needs, network requirements, service access, and whether its basic function remains convenient if an app changes. A simple switch may be the better fit for some homes.

Use the report as a list of questions, not as a shopping list. Measure the room, check product specifications, and ask your contractor what must be decided before ordering. A design idea earns its place when it serves your routine and fits the room you have.
