THE FINISHWISE JOURNAL

Order finish materials with enough time to check them

Lead times change, and delivery day is not the day to discover a missing part. Confirm timing, quantities, and inspection responsibility.

The installation date is only one part of an item's timing. A special-order faucet, tile, or cabinet pull may need to arrive earlier so the box can be checked and a missing piece can be replaced before it becomes urgent.

Ask about the real sequence

For each selection, ask the contractor or supplier when the item must be ordered, when it is expected to arrive, and when it is needed on site. Lead times can change, so treat an estimate as information to recheck rather than a guarantee. Find out whether the date assumes the exact color and size you selected.

Check whether the item is in stock and whether the supplier will hold it. Some products have return fees or cannot be returned after opening. Ask who will receive and inspect the delivery, where it can be stored, and how damage should be recorded. Tile, stone, and wood need suitable storage conditions; an outdoor porch may not be safe for every box.

Plan a sensible backup

If a product becomes unavailable, do not substitute based only on a thumbnail. Confirm dimensions, finish, performance, and compatibility with the rest of the room. A replacement faucet can have different hole spacing; an alternate tile can change the layout and grout quantity.

Keep the order confirmation with the exact model, color, quantity, and expected date. Check the delivered label against that record before installation. If something is wrong, contact the supplier promptly and tell the contractor, rather than letting the crew discover it after opening the box.

Earlier ordering can reduce uncertainty, but ordering too early may create storage and return problems. Agree on a date that gives room to inspect the goods without filling the house with materials for months.
